Pictography and Ideograms

The Mesopotamians went steps ahead and started impressing tokens onto clay envelopes to create pictographic signs. Such pictographic signs maintained their semantic meanings and were utilized for accounting just like the tokens. Over time, they invented numerals, which allowed them to represent abstract quantities creating a huge leap in data abstraction.

Logography and Phonetics  

This form began imitating spoken language around 3000BC especially as it embraced phonetic signs. Some of its characteristic use includes transcription of personal names with the help of logograms and rebus-like combinations. This development empowered the shift from accounting into writing, literature, religion, and administration.

The Alphabet

The Proto-Sinaitic alphabet comprised of 22 consonantal signs based on acrophony in 1500BC. Later on, the Greeks added vowels creating a complete system for speech transcription. Ultimately, the alphabet evolved into the foundation of Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, and other modern scripts.

The Modern Alphabets

The Latin alphabet spread through the Roman conquest. Charlemagne standardized it. Later developments took place through the printing press and digital technologies allowing the dissemination of alphabetic forms. These forms have maintained their stability over the years despite changes in form.
